The Grey Chronicles

The Grey Chronicles: An Overview

The Grey Chronicles is the journal of Rey Adel. The color grey became the recurring tinge in most aspects of Rey Adel’s life. After a two-year stint with the Long Grey Line, a military academy in the Philippines, the revolving thesis of his Novel, Rey Adel donned the grey shirt-jack of National Steel Corporation.

To pay homage to the prominence of grey in Rey Adel’s life struggles, this blog chronicles these events and thus, aptly entitled: The Grey Chronicles.

The Grey Chronicles tackle issues, though diverse from one another, such as Steel Manufacturing, Production Management, Internet Security, the Philippine Situationer, and being a book lover, Thoughts on Recent Readings.

The Grey, The Green and The Golden Orange

Steel Manufacturing posts encompass Rey Adel’s recollection of his experiences while working with National Steel Corporation [NSC], the biggest steel plant in the Philippines. Rey Adel was hired as an Engineering Management Trainee in 1989, and became an Electrical Planner in 1995 until NSC closed in 2000. These posts form the bulk of “The Grey Ascendance” pages. Retrospection of Rey Adel’s articles in the corporate magazine “The NSC News” are also included.

During NSC’s liquidation, after the bankruptcy of NSC while held by private firms–Wing Tiek and Hottick–Rey Adel was rehired as the Team Leader, Technical Planning. These blogs comprise “The Green Debacle” pages. Although much of the materials are based on a particular Production Management master’s thesis submitted to a prestigious state university, it is desired that the blogs’ narrative would trigger public discourse of the referred events. Most of these were unfortunately excised from the formally written thesis due to stringent style requirements.

When NSC was acquired by Global Steel Holdings, Ltd [GHSL] in 2004, Rey Adel was hired as a Shift-in-Charge to the present. The “Global” Chronicles, originally called “The Chronicles of Global” {as a parody of Narnia} includes Rey Adel’s observations, experiences and sundries during this phase. These posts, all based on actual events, are culled from personal recollections or personnel anecdotes, included in here not to assign blame, find fault or connote negative thoughts, but rather to present real-life lessons on cultural differences, case studies on management or leadership styles, or humor taken with a grain of salt! [Addendum: The result of this section is called Grey Day in September!

In 2005, Global Steel envisioned a corporate newsletter, “The Phoenix,” but it was never published because of editorial and managerial differences. Some of the blogs were supposedly ideas for newsletter articles, but the ink dried up before the phoenix could fly! Thus, instead of waiting for its resurrection, this blog serves the purpose of an on-line venue to once again delve into the written, or should it be: encoded, word.

The Grey Undertones

Rey Adel is also an active participant of the Internet community from his discovery of the medium in 1989. Ever since the Internet provided him impetus to pursue an on-line writing preoccupation. In 1990, Rey Adel decided to launch a philatelic collection site hosted by GeoCities. He became a GeoCities Topic Master for Stamp Collecting, the Editor-in-Chief of GeoCities Tokyo Ezine, the Administrator of GeoCities Best of Tokyo pages. Issuance of his website’s monthly newsletter, replies to regular emails and guest book entries from philatelic site visitors further honed his writing skills.

With the onslaught of security issues which started its meteoric rise by the mid-90s, Rey Adel focused on the study of Internet technology, with emphasis on security. Also, while studying for his master’s course, he elected to write a paper on Information Security as a project for a Management Information Systems course. Advocating Open Source, the blogs on this section tackle mostly Open Source security software and their application to Windows systems.

Interaction with the corporate Information Systems department, primarily as a critical user, Rey Adel wrote several memos on the implementation of corporate information and Internet security, based on experience, research and best practices. Several of these memos are quoted, analyzed and discussed in this blog.

At present, Rey Adel is a Computer & Internet top contributor in Yahoo!Answers. Issues concerning the latter, especially on Internet Security, are also tackled here. The posts tackle in depth the prevailing issues asked by Yahoo!Answers members, as well as real-life experiences in Corporate Information Security Management.

The Long Grey Notes

In allusion to the Long Grey Line, this section entitled “The Long Grey Notes” includes a take on the Philippine situation and being a voracious reader, posts on recent readings consist of a thesis of the book, article, or website, and how they can be applied to the Philippine situation.

Being a student in business management, the posts included in this section tackle on emerging trends in business and its impact to management.

This section includes all other blogs not necessarily categorized under the sections “The Grey, The Green and The Golden Orange” [Steel Manufacturing] and “The Grey Undertones” [Internet Security]
