Reinstalled Firefox 3.6.13 after suffering for three days with a mouse event wherein right clicks on a link in an active tab opens a new tab. Although for a moment the right-click context menu will be shown, but still the new tab was already loading the page in another tab. The right-click context menu offering to Open Link in New Tab became redundant.
For the past years, I have used about 18 Firefox Add-ons automatically updated. These Add-ons are as follow:
All-in-One Sidebar 0.7.12, view Add-ons, Downloads, etc. in the side bar,
Bookmark Duplicate Detector 1.0.4, eliminates duplicate bookmarks,
bug489729 1.3, disable detach tab and enables URL drop

Years back, when I first installed Firefox 1.5, tried some other Add-Ons but after awhile un-installed them because some became a pain in the ass. Others did not really made browsing much easier but made Firefox load a tad slower. Thus, when Mozilla released version 3.0, the above mentioned Add-ons became the de facto additions to all my Firefox 3.6.13 installations: in the workplace, this notebook, and in Portable Firefox.
In addition, the following plug-ins are also installed:

Tried to pinpoint what was causing this by going the whole process of starting Firefox in Safe Mode. What bugged me was that Firefox installed in the workplace and the Firefox Portable exhibited none of this right-click predicament. Thus, I surmised that maybe the Firefox installed in this notebook was really buggy! So hereunder are the steps I tried to recover the functionality of the right-click context menu WITHOUT another new tab opening the link clicked on an active tab!
First, disabled all the installed Add-ons then enabling them one by one, i.e., one Add-on at a time then restart (make that 18 restarts), yet nothing changed. Second, disabled ALL these Add-Ons and ALL the plugins. Still nothing!
Not to worry, Firefox could still handle opening a link with left mouse clicks but doing so would directly supplant whatever page was viewed on that tab. Thus, for example, in a Google search showing a list of URLs, a left-click on one URL would supplant the Google search listing on that tab, but a right-click on a URL would immediately open a new tab displaying the page fetched by that URL. The annoying thing was the right-click context menu till shows the option to Open Link in New Window or Open Link in New Tab, etc!
