The Grey Chronicles

Keep Your Windows Open

For the first time since my sister have sent me emails: spams regarding spam, health scares, growing my hair, saving my life in an emergency, forwarded UCEs, love, friendship, relations, etc., I received a really good email, entitled: 40 Tips for a Better Life in 2009, from her today and allow me to share it to you all with my usual annotations, enjoy!

1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.
Annotation: Beware, if you smile while walking on your own, and you might be seen by others like a fool! Thus, only smile at people, not yourself! Otherwise, sing or hum!

2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.
Annotation: With no work for 24 days for this month, I could do that, except my 2-year old son would nudge me to play with him every other five minutes!

3. Buy a DVR and tape your late night shows and get more sleep.
Annotation: With the downturn, a.k.a. recession, alias “unprecedented crises” I can’t afford to buy a DVR, I even had the cable subscription cut-off. Our TV became short of a paper weight!

4. When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, 'My purpose is to __________ today.'
Annotation: My purpose is to Save breakfast to become my lunch! today.

5. Live with the 3 E's — Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.
Annotation: Else Everything Ends!

6. Play more games and read more books than you did in 2008.
Annotation: I’m playing with my son now! For the second part, I believe I have surpassed my book quota for 2007 last year, and will aim to do it again this year!

7. Make time to practice meditation, and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives.
Annotation: Blogging is sort of a meditation for me. Praying is too personal to blog about.

8. Spend time with people over the age of 80 and under the age of 6.
Annotation: Got to find a neighbor over 80; my son is two going three!

9. Dream more while you are awake.
Annotation: Awake, I’m dreaming that GSPI is operating to full capacity!

10. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
Annotation: Why was fish and meat excluded?

11. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds & walnuts.
Annotation: Tea and water are fine, the rest are pricey!

12. Try to make at least five people smile each day – including yourself!
Annotation: My wife, my son, my mother-in-law, myself . . . that’s four! Aha! one neighbor will make it five!

13. Clear clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.
Annotation: My sister knew that I have not sorted my collection of documents for my thesis still lying somewhere in my work desk. Sorry, I own no car! Maybe, opening the windows and doors could also let the new and flowing energy in.

14. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, or issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
Annotation: “Not learning from the past is a presage to repeating the same,” I wrote to conclude my master’s thesis.

15. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
Annotation: I’m learning now that life can be unfair, even if you took algebra to heart and calculus to boot!

16. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.
Annotation: This time around, I eat brunch. No dinner for me, only supper.

17. Smile and laugh more. It will keep the NEGATIVE BLUES away.
Annotation: What’s this smile obsession? Got POSITIVE BLUES, by the way?

18. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
Annotation: Yeah! But most of us still crave for a fair and good life!

19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
Annotation: Hating stops at death, my grandpa once said!

20. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
Annotation: Are you serious? Remember, anyone who is serious should be in a hospital!

21. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
Annotation: Try this once-in-a-while: I agree with your disagreeable argument!

22. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.
Annotation: Peace be with you, my PAST!

23. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
Annotation: How about talking to them, so that you could compare their journey to yours?

24. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
Annotation: Yeah! I’m happy when I’m charged, in-charge, or discharged!

25. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'
Annotation: The Great Depression still mattered after 75 years, so that’s a disaster! Eventually, GSPI closing in 2008 will matter in 2013.

26. Forgive everyone for everything – including yourself.
Annotation: Forgive, but let’s not forget!

27. What other people think of you is none of your business.
Annotation: Johara’s window.

28. Remember God heals everything.
Annotation: Even Bamboo sang, Hallelujah!

29. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
Annotation: Change is the only constant.

30. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
Annotation: For us Filipinos, family will.

31. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
Annotation: Or things that can be used against you in court.

32. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
Annotation: Where? Is the question, if you settled for less!

33. The best is yet to come.
Annotation: For the impatient: When? That’s the six-million dollar question!

34. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
Annotation: Let this be your motto, prior to a job interview!

35. Do the right thing!
Annotation: And mind your left!

36. Call your family often. (Or email them to death!!!)
Annotation: Depends on your pre-paid credit! (My sister is fond of it!!!)

37. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements : I am thankful for __________. Today I accomplished _________.
Annotation: I am thankful for everything. Today I accomplished nothing.

38. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed. .

Annotation: What I can remember is that I am stressed to be too blessed!

39. Enjoy the ride. Remember this is not Disney World and you certainly don't want a fast pass. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.
Annotation: So, life is not fair, but you could be the fare!

40. Please Forward this to everyone you care about. I just did. May your troubles be less, May your blessings be more, May nothing but happiness come through your door!
Annotation: If the door is closed, keep your windows open.

  1. LOL. This is a good one, Rey. “E-mails are like a box of chocolates – you’ll never know what you’re gonna get”.
