Continued from yesterday’s post, which relates the way online war-gamers deal with diplomacy between real people through in-game messaging. Previously, I narrated the events about the attack on my Travian village from someone belonging to one of the big Speed Server Alliances.
Aside from the apology, I explained that I have written one of their Alliance leaders, Mister X, about the predicament of the old alliance, and repeated another Sorry, for bothering about diplomacy. I invited him to read a previous post, which explains the simple reason why I was barely online in September. The aggressor, replied: “am the main leader Mister X is secondary… ”
Reviewing the Alliance C’s profile again, the aggressor’s name was second in line to Mister X, who I presumed was the Alliance’s supreme leader. I apologized for my mistake, but still broached the possibility of a Non-Aggression Pact [NAP] between Alliance C and the newly-founded Alliance X v.2.0. I received no reply.
Later, I revisited the Alliance C’s profile and found out that Mister X’s name was deleted from the roll of its officers. Rebuild …. rebuild … rebuild …. No attacks forthcoming, I presumed. Incidentally, I received requests for membership to the revived Alliance X v.2.0 from former members of the original Alliance X, but advised them not to join yet as the baptism of fire is still raging. Unfortunately, with the limited production of crops, my raiding troops also died on their way back to my village to bring in their loots.
The next day, another torrent of attacks came. It was an onslaught incomparable from what I was accustomed in other servers. Several other Alliances, obviously confederates of Alliance C, came to join the fray. The village was literally attacked from all sides. The aggressors were sending in troops by the thousands; rams and catapults by the hundreds.
All these versus a few troops my village could muster after the other day’s waves of attack. It was surgical, deliberate, relentless, and seemingly without an end in sight. If there were baby armalites, Kalashnikovs, howitzers, bazookas, mortars, armored tanks, fighter jets, heat-seeking missiles, nuclear warheads, or even the kitchen sink, they might have used them, too! Reminiscent of the all-out war on Abu Bakar, the stronghold and training camp of MILF? Had Travian World contained water, instead of purely land, they could also sent a fleet of Triremes, Caravels, Ironclads, Galleons, Destroyers, Frigates, Cruisers or Submarines. Similarly, if flight was discovered in Medieval times, then they might as well brought a bevy of Jet Fighters, Apache Helicopters, Bombers and Zeppelins.
Fortunately, Travian is based on the Medieval wars where Rams, Catapults, and Trebuchets were the implements of war as well as the fighting machines of Roman troops of Legionaires, Praetorians, Imperians, Equites Legati, Equites Imperatoris, and Equites Caesaris; Teutonic troops of Clubswingers, Spearmen, Axemen, Paladins, and Teutonic Knights; and Gallic troops of Phalanxes, Swordsmen, Pathfinders, Theutates Thunders, Druidriders and Haeduan Knights.
I sent an in-game message [IGM] to the former Alliance X founder, who a week ago joined one of the attacking Alliances. Fortunately, he was not one of those aggressors sending waves of attacks to my singular village. I asked about the short version of the history of the founding of Alliance X in Server 3, where we all met for the first time; and queried him why almost all the Alliances in the top ten of Travian Speed Server were attacking my Village.
He offered me a piece of his mind on strategy, saying: “In Travian, population do not count, troops do. You should have built more troops and upgraded the resource fields; instead of upgrading or building unnecessary installations.”
If he could only see the insides of my village, he would have been impressed by my improvement here in Speed Server compared to my village in Server 2. My lackluster performance at Server 2 was probably brought by my inactivity in August because of my pending case in real life, as well as the long duration my village had to suffer alone before being invited to join an alliance; and I never applied for one not knowing anyone in there.
In the Speed Server, most of my village’s lumberyards, clay pits, iron mines and croplands are nearing level ten! The Grain Mill was at Level 4 already before the recent attacks. My troops are raiding and farming nearby, and even faraway, villages that sometimes the loot overwhelms the village’s Granary and Warehouse. The defense was sufficient for the time being, and even when my village was raided, only minute amounts of resources became booty with minimize troop casualty. Except for a few days in September, my village was virtually not farmed for resources.
All these with sheer determination, a clear sense of strategy, no Travian Plus account, no 24-hour sitter, no automatic scripts employed like Greasemonkey, with no formidable Alliance who could send help when attacked, and no multiple accounts to cheat the Travian game. My Speed Server village flourish through self-sufficiency, the occasional IGM of diplomacy, amidst a legion of big-named Alliance members surrounding it. When villages I repeatedly attacked for sometime pleaded for mercy, I usually just let them go and scout other villages to raid.
Most importantly, I was only online for about one hour per day for the rest of September! I increased my online presence beginning this month because with much bigger production output from the various resource fields and loot from precision attacks on other unsuspecting villages, I would have to continually upgrade the levels of my village’s buildings and troops, else the resources would have gone to waste when they filled up the Warehouse and Granary capacities.
My Travian strategy, declared in my player profile, was for all to see. Apparently commonly used in these kind of games, the phrase: The best defense is a good offense, Google suggests, is a misquote of Carl von Clausewitz and has also been attributed to the heavyweight prizefighter Jack Dempsey. With doubtful attribution, anyone could use it directly or as I have chosen, paraphrased it to suit the situation.
I am wondering now whether the declaration in my player profile or the debut of a new alliance was the root cause of these incessant attacks. I can’t help but also wonder, moreover, whether I am dealing with a sensible and intelligent adult here or a spoiled teenager with too much time to spare and too much money to spend. I might sound condescending, but I suspect the latter!
